  • Funding opportunity for ME Ph.D. student

A new Ph.D. position is available for Mechanical Engineers.

The objective of the project is to research the military aircraft engine life assessment procedures. Currently the engine components use a method called safe life, which upon reaching, the components are retired. It is felt that these components have in them a considerable amount to usage left. Therefore, there is a need to review the methods used in the design of rotating disk components and also see various codes within military and civilian sides that are used. The position will not only look at the military side of the codes and civilian side, but also look into the engine manufacturers what they do to certify engines for civilian and military applications. The project will develop robust design methods/tools, via experimental and computational FEA works.

Hands on work with FEM modeling, inspection methods (non-destructive) testing and analysis will be required. The yearly stipend is $18,000 and tuition will be covered as well. Leadership quality, ability to work with different people (engineers and scientists at the Base) and places, industry and personal interests to develop and validate new hypotheses, developing interactive damage summation models will be required. Experience with FEM modeling and mechanical testing will be needed for this project. This student will work closely with a Research Professor both of whom will be located in a secure area for the project and will work for Dr. Tarun Goswami.

Those interested for consideration for this position, please contact Dr. Tarun Goswami at tarun.goswami@wright.edu

US citizenship will be required for this position and opportunity to work with the base exists right from the start of the project.

  • Childcare scholarship available for CECS Students

Undergraduate students facing childcare expenses are invited to apply for the SCARF Scholarship.

The deadline is September 03, 2008, so please do not delay. Awards of $50 per week per child may be made to five students.

Society for Childcare Assistance/Relief (SCARF) Scholarship Information

    Purpose

Childcare issues present challenges to undergraduate students in every discipline but are particularly taxing for students who are enrolled in the rigorous science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs. However, as studies have concluded that the United States is losing its technological edge, these are the students who need timely graduations. The Society for Childcare Assistance/Relief (SCARF) scholarship program, endowed by John O. and Janet E. Miller, aims at helping address childcare costs for undergraduate STEM students who have dependent children living with them. Wright State University (WSU), Dayton, Ohio is the pilot site for this program starting the school year of 2008-2009.

    Support Provided

The 2008-2009 program will provide scholarship awards for WSU undergraduate STEM students of $50/week each for childcare costs during actual 2008-2009 school term weeks. Five scholarships will be awarded at all times so if one recipient graduates, another recipient may be awarded. Payment will be made directly to the student at the beginning of each quarter for the quarter. Continuation of the award between terms will be determined on a case-by-case basis considering: the length of break between actual class sessions; childcare arrangements, and opportunities for the student to mentor or internship in their field during breaks. Feedback from awardees will be required as input to future scholarship program design. The scholarship is
    renewable, subject to availability.

    Eligibility

Applicants must fit the following criteria:
    • Be an undergraduate student who is currently enrolled at WSU. Full time students will be given priority but half time students will be considered with explanation of circumstance
    • Be a junior or senior in a STEM field which is in demand to address the technology gap
    • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
    • Have dependent children (12 years old or younger or a child with special needs under the age of 19) living with them who incur childcare expenses from a legal provider
    • Demonstrate financial need
    • Be in good academic standing, maintaining a GPA of at least 2.5

    Application Requirements

A completed scholarship application includes the following materials:
    • A completed and signed application form
    • Recommendation by one WSU faculty or staff using the included form with applicant’s signature for waiver of review. Due to time constraints for 2008, list the name of whomever you will be asking for a recommendation on the application form so that the
selection committee may contact the person if necessary.
    • A typed essay (not to exceed 800 words) describing your educational and career goals. The essay must detail your circumstantial or financial need and discuss how this award will help you achieve your goals.

    Selection Criteria

The scholarship selection committee will be chaired by the President of SCARF and will consist of the Director of the Women’s Center or her designee and one university staff/faculty volunteer who is invited by the director. The committee evaluates the applicants and selects the qualified recipients based on the following criteria: relevance of major, academic record, circumstantial and financial need and quality of application/essay.

    Time schedule

All materials are due to the Women’s Center by September 3, 2008 for the Autumn Quarter.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis so that five scholarships may be awarded at all times. Applicants for Autumn 2008 will be contacted through their university email by September 8, 2008.

For more information, contact Cindy Oakley in the Dean's Office (405 Russ, cindy.oakley@wright.edu) or contact the Women's Center (148 Millett, 775-4524).

  • Funding opportunity for BME Ph.D. student

A new Ph.D. position is under development. The objective of the project is to research the spinal implants particularly used in the cervical areas. Biomechanical models will be needed to understand the laboratory behavior of the spine with the implant, their failures under different load conditions simulating the aggressive environment as is the case in active duty conditions. High strain rate tests data will be needed to know the impact forces and failure of the devices. Other conditions may be under vibratory conditions. This project may also lead to the development of new devices, instrumentation, and other materials research that will be involved.

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, cell and tissue work, biocompatibility, biomaterials, will be needed and hands on work with the device development testing and analysis will be required.

The yearly stipend is likely to be $18,000 and tuition will be covered as well. Leadership quality, ability to work with different people (physicians, engineers, medical students, residents, and fellows) and places and personal interests to develop and validate new hypotheses separating elasticity, plasticity, viscoelasticity and developing interactive damage summation models will be required as applicable for cervical spine. Experience of computer programming and mechanical testing will be needed for this project.

Those interested for consideration for this position please contact Dr. Tarun Goswami at tarun.goswami@wright.edu
US citizenship will be required for this position and travel with some of the military facilities will be needed as well.
