The Joshi Research Center is a 50,000 square foot expansion of the Fritz and Dolores Russ Engineering Center.
The building has flexible teaching and meeting space, Internet 2
capability, and space for several Research Centers of Excellence, allowing the
College of Engineering and Computer Science to
enhance its partnerships with WPAFB and local industry. One feature of
the Joshi Center, the R.C. Appenzeller Visualization Laboratory,
features a virtual, fully immersive environment and large-scale
display wall allowing researchers to visualize and manipulate their
research data, from the microscopic functions of proteins to new designs
for aircraft controls
.
The Joshi Center is also home to daytaOhio, a part of Ohio's Third Frontier Initiative, which aims to
create jobs by expanding the state's high-tech research capabilities.
Wright State is the lead institution for the $43 million project for
data management innovation, which includes an $11 million award from
the state of Ohio and a $32 million match from industry and government.
The facility also houses offices for the LexisNexis Eminent Scholar and his
team of researchers, as well as the Wright State Research Institute
(WSRI). An endowed faculty position, the Eminent Scholar is funded by
LexisNexis and the Ohio Board of Regents. WSRI is the applied research arm of
Wright State University, and creates partnerships between research
sponsors and researchers from across the University.
The center brings together some of the world's best research teams and
local, national, and international business interests to foster the
development and commercialization of new and emerging technologies. The College is
thus able to train engineers and computer scientists with the innovation and
entrepreneurial skills needed to grow the state's economy.
The center is named after Krishan Joshi, president, CEO and founder of
UES, Inc., a high technology research and development company
headquartered in Dayton, and his wife, Vicky, who made the lead gift.
A gift from Robert and Joan Appenzeller created the R.C. Appenzeller
Visualization Laboratory as part of the new research center.
