The Academic Advantage Program is an intense and innovative program offered by the College of Engineering and Computer Science. This program is especially designed for first-year students who will enter engineering or computer science programs at Wright State University this fall (Fall Quarter 2008).

Why should I sign up?

The purpose of Academic Advantage is to help entering engineering and computer science students succeed by easing the transition from high school to college. University education in general is a challenging endeavor, and the study of engineering or computer science in particular can be rigorous and demanding. Having the right skills up front---the kinds of skills provided by Academic Advantage---will make meeting the challenge of higher education much easier.

"This is a great program. My son had the typical apprehension about beginning college, but after a week of Academic Advantage he was ready to begin fall quarter with more confidence, a positive view of the faculty and three new friends."

William Gresham
Parent of an AAP student

What will I learn?

The focus of the program is to provide students with three distinct advantages:

  1. Math and Science Skills
    • The focus of this instruction is to review the math skills that you need most in your first year of college. Multiple math sections will be offered with the instruction tailored to your specific math skill level. Problem solving sessions will reinforce fundamentals and build your confidence. Instructors are members of the College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty. Whether you need algebra or trigonometry refresher or already have a calculus background, you will benefit from the instruction.
    • Regardless of your math placement level, whether its college algebra or calculus II, you will be challenged.
    • At the end of the week, students are given the opportunity to re-take their math placement level test and potentially move up one or more levels.
  2. Study and Success Strategies
    • The Academic Advantage program teaches you the most important academic skill of them all---how to learn. The math review will stress how to listen, take notes, and understand difficult concepts more efficiently and effectively.
  3. Social Interaction
    • Students will interact with our College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty and students, in and out of the classroom. There will be a Monday night barbecue, as well as many other opportunities to talk about WSU college life and how to be a successful student. There will be optional evening activities.

Other Advantages and Spin-off Benefits

  • Three convenient attendance options for students:
    • Commute to the program
    • Live on-campus just for the week during the program
    • Students planning to live in the Engineering and Computer Science Community housed in Hamilton Hall beginning fall quarter, have an early move-in option to their permanent dorm room
  • Opportunity to retake the Math Placement Level Test
  • Early familiarization with the engineering and computer science facilities, as well as the rest of campus
  • Opportunity to get to know other students in your freshman class, as well as some current students and faculty members
